So many Pops fans are unfamiliar with what I do when not on the podium with the Pops. For the last nine years, I have been Music Director of the Utah Symphony, an orchestra with a wonderful tradition, truly one of this country's great orchestras. We released a recording last spring that I am very proud of, and that I think you will enjoy. "Symphonic Dances" brings together the dances from Bernstein's "West Side Story," the gorgeous, amazingly romantic "Symphonic Dances" of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and a new work by the Peruvian-American composer Gabriela Frank called "Latin-American Dances." They are delightful, fiery, and very listenable works by a young composer whom I think everyone will be talking about soon.
Selections: Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)
1. Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story” Gabriela Lena Frank Three Latin American Dances
2. Introduction: Jungle Jaunt
3. Highland Harawi
4. The Mestizo Waltz Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) Symphonic Dances, op. 45
