LENOX — Stephen Sondheim was always ahead of his time. His incandescent 1973 Tony award-winner, "A Little Night Music," loosely adapted from Ingmar Bergman's film "Smiles of a Summer Night," was a great critical success but ran for only 18 months on Broadway and has yet to be revived in New York.
Now, Sondheim is revered by audiences as a great master and popular favorite. So, it was quite fitting that Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops, working with the vocal Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center and four theater pros, chose this witty, sardonic and emotionally satisfying romp through the social mores of upper-crust 1900 Swedish society around for their second semi-staged, full-length musical.
First performed over three nights at Boston's Symphony Hall last month and repeated for a highly enthusiastic Tanglewood audience on Tuesday, the production proved to be a deeply satisfying revisit to one of Sondheim's most engaging scores.
Some of the most memorable moments from Evening at Pops are celebrated in this new Broadway's Best at Pops DVD which will make a great addition to your Pops collection.
